June Fraternity Update

Jun 17, 2021 | Categories: Announcements, Blog

In January ‘21 our Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Access (DEIA) Task Force submitted their report with many recommendations for Theta Phi Alpha. We have established a standing committee to focus on DEIA within the organization. This nine-member team will continue beyond the biennium, beyond the current Grand Council. Another outcome of the Task Force report is the establishment of the Ritual Committee which will work together to ensure that Theta Phi ritual welcomes women of all faiths and can accommodate women of all abilities. The committee is expected to propose changes at Convention 2022 in Memphis.

We have engaged a DEIA consultant to run an assessment of the organization to understand where you are. This will tell us where to put our resources in training and education. Thanks to an individual donation, it has kept the cost to a minimum. The survey is now live and we ask that you please share your thoughts with Theta Phi. We want to hear from you!

Our National Constitution and Bylaws (NC&B) Committee has been hard at work to update our document to comply with Robert’s Rules of Order, with consideration for the future, and lessons learned from the pandemic. We plan to review our NC&B more frequently, as typical for a non-profit, so it doesn’t need such a major overhaul again. The document was last updated significantly in the early ’80s! We will have much to review prior to, and at, Convention. We will utilize webinars leading up to Convention to review and ask questions on all amendments proposed for vote. Please participate in the webinars so you are prepared to vote in Memphis.
Be on the lookout for Compass Connections again this summer. These are opportunities to connect with each other in virtual settings.

As the Fall 2021 semester approaches, we know that many of you will return to campus full-time for the first time in over a year... and for many, for the first time ever. Through our excitement to gather together, be in each other’s presence, and give each other hugs and high fives, please remember that the safety and well-being of our members should always be the top priority. Please continue to observe all federal, state, and local mandates around events and continue to adhere to Theta Phi Alpha National Policies.
