DEIA - Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Access. This important acronym that was once unknown to me now holds a significant place in how I live my life and in the advancement and relevance of Theta Phi Alpha into the future. In 2020, Theta Phi Alpha created a DEIA Task Force to address equality in racial, religious, cultural, gender, socioeconomic, ability, and sexual diversity to ensure respectful, equitable, and dignified treatment of all members and potential new members. This task force provided the framework for the Fraternity to examine our governing documents, policies and procedures, and the experience we deliver to our members. While much work has been done, this work will only be complete if we work to be an organization where all our members feel included, valued, and seen.

Happy 2024! I recently read an article about choosing a word of the year. This word is meant to guide and remind you of your focus and what is important to you. After thinking about this article, I chose the word “present” for my word of the year. I’m a planner and often worry about things that might happen in the future. Sometimes, I do not appreciate what I am experiencing at a particular moment. That is why I chose the word present - to help me remember to be grateful for each day and each experience, no matter what that may be.

As 2023 ends, I am taking time to reflect and remember all the things I am thankful for. Theta Phi Alpha and our members are at the top of my list. I am so thankful to be a part of our fraternity and that I found a place to belong in college. I’m thankful for the members who mentored me throughout my service to Theta Phi Alpha and the experiences and friendships that continue to enrich my life. I’m thankful for those who came before me whose vision and leadership guided Theta Phi Alpha to remain a relevant organization today.

How do you model service for others in your life? Before joining Theta Phi Alpha, the extent of my service to others was donating canned goods to a schoolwide food drive at my high school during the holidays each year. I had never heard the term philanthropy. All that changed when I became a member of Theta Phi Alpha.

One of my favorite volunteer roles for Theta Phi Alpha happened in the early 1990's when I was the Emerging Chapter Advisor for the Beta Chi chapter at Missouri Valley College in Marshall, MO. There are few things that are more exciting to me in Theta Phi Alpha than a new chapter!

Theta Phi Alpha, 𝝧𝚽𝝖.…this is who we are.  Our Founders chose our name for us in 1912.  This is the name on our articles of incorporation and in our governing documents.  As an organization, we protect our name, logo, and identity through trademarks.  I am proud to be a Theta Phi Alpha…I wouldn’t want to be anything else!  I know our members feel the same.  As I’m scrolling through Facebook and Instagram and seeing pictures of recruitment and other events, sometimes I cringe a little.  I see images with TPA on banners, balloons, and wooden letters.  Sometimes, I see us referred to as Thetas.  I would like to explain why this makes me cringe!

Dear Theta Phi Alphas,

Happy Founding Day! Today marks 111 years since Theta Phi Alpha was founded!! I am thankful for our Founders’ and the commitment they had to our great Fraternity.

As the excitement of the new academic year falls upon us, I would like to use my blog this month to update you on what is happening at the national level of Theta Phi Alpha.  We are halfway through the biennium and there are many exciting updates to share.  That makes my blog a longer read than past months.  I hope you find a positive return for the time it takes to read.

What fills your bucket? In other words, what fills your heart with joy and causes you to smile until your face hurts from smiling? For me, spending time with Theta Phi Alphas fills my bucket! My bucket is overflowing after attending Officer Leadership Training (OLT) at the University of Maryland and a gathering for alumnae in the Washington D.C. area this month.

Our chapters and collegians are the essences of Theta Phi Alpha.  Without our chapters and collegians, there would be no Theta Phi Alpha. The past five years have been challenging times for these precious members. At the 2022 Convention in Memphis, our collegians showed us how much they value their membership in Theta Phi Alpha and how passionate they are about the success of our Fraternity.

What is the last Theta Phi Alpha ritual you participated in? Was it Founders’ Day in April when we honored those who brought Theta Phi Alpha into being? Was it the Collegian Farewell ceremony as you said good-bye to your collegian experience and entered the alumna phase of membership?
